An Evening for Night Owls
Every autumn a small north woods owl called the Saw-whet migrates south in a silent and secretive wave. The staff at Quarry Hill is among a small group of researchers trying to capture and band these birds in the eastern US in an effort to better understand their migration. The evening begins at the Nature Center learning about Quarry Hill’s research with the secretive Saw-whet Owl. Then participants will caravan a couple of miles east of town to visit the owl banding site. There, after a 10-minute uphill hike to the study site, we will check the nets and band any captured owls. Make sure to bring your flashlight! Hiking footwear is recommended for uneven trails. In the event of poor weather conditions, this program will be cancelled. -

Harvest Bloom Arrangement
This Thanksgiving, let your creativity shine in our flower arranging class! You’ll start with a unique compote of your choosing. It will be yours to fill with beautiful fall stems and unique pops of color. Think deep, rich tones paired with the freshness of eucalyptus and other lush foliage to bring movement and shape to your arrangement. Whether you’re new to arranging or a seasoned pro, we’ll provide all the guidance you need to make your creation stand out. Will you stick with a classic symmetrical design, or challenge yourself to create something unique and asymmetrical? The choice is yours—this is your chance to get out of your comfort zone and have fun with your flowers! -

Mayo Planetarium's "Jupiter, Saturn, Moons and More!"
Jupiter and Saturn are huge planets, with huge moons. The United States and Europeans have recently launched billion dollar probes to investigate these places, looking for resources, and for signs of life. Join us as we fly to these planets and their different moons to discuss things like volcanoes, lakes of methane, frozen oceans, and potential future habitability. Suggested ages 8 and up. Have you ever been to Australia, South Africa, Chile, or Antarctica? If so, you may have noticed that the night sky is not the same as here in rochesterschools, MN! Come learn about the constellations and deep sky objects that you can only see in the skies of Earth’s southern hemisphere! Suggested ages 10 and up. Mayo Planetarium's “The Blue in the Distance”
Come join us for an evening of live music, poetry, and thoughtful imagery of Minnesota's nature! The musical quartet group, Zeitgeist, from Red Wing, will perform live in the planetarium, and will show us fulldome nature imagery of Quarry State Park in St. Cloud, and other places in Minnesota's northern landscapes. The evening will include pieces entitled "Blue in the Distance", "NORTH", and "Twelve Months", which have all had amazing reviews in other planetariums here in Minnesota. The quartet group features percussion, piano, and woodwinds. The artists include Heather Barringer, Scott L. Miller, Mary Ellen Childs, Asuka Kakitani, Caitlin Hammel, Joyce Sutphen, and others. Come enjoy this truly unique event as technology, music, and art merge together to form an unforgettable experience. Wreath Making: Nature's Bounty Series
Using an assortment of evergreens from native MN conifers, participants will learn to build a beautiful wreath that will last throughout the season. An assortment of ribbon and natural adornments provided by nature’s bounty—such as pine cones, berries, and feathers—can be added to make the wreath a holiday showpiece for you to hang in your home or gift to a friend! No experience needed. All supplies will be provided. A $25.00 supply fee will be collected at the beginning of the class. Cash or Check only.
