Railroad Spike KnifeArts and CraftsRailroad spikes serve many purposes in the world of blacksmithing, but now you can take it to the next level by making your own railroad spike knife! In this one-day class, you will learn shop safety, twisting the handle, forging the blade, shaping, quenching, beveling, and putting on an edge. By the end of this class, each student will have completed their own railroad spike knife to take home. Blacksmithing experience is helpful, but not required. Instructor will provide: all necessary equipment, supplies, beverages, and snacks. You will need to wear/bring: long pants, leather shoes (boots preferred), safety glasses/hearing protection, face mask, and your lunch. RiversideSchool Age Child Care (SACC)The School Age Child Care Program is available at all Rochester Public Schools Elementary sites. The program provides a safe, nurturing environment where children can feel they are significant and they belong. Our goal of the School Age Child Care Program is to provide a variety of developmentally appropriate activities including arts/crafts, STEM activities, self-directed play, field trips, library, tech time, physical activities (indoor/outdoor), community service, and to offer an environment where homework is encouraged. You will register for summer and school year care separately based on your family needs. Registrations are reviewed in the order they are received in our online system and can take up to ten (10) business days to process. Accounts that have an overdue balance will not be processed. 2026-2027 School Year Contract (August 26,2026-June 3,2027) Registration is open at all sites SACC CONTRACTS INCLUDE: Before School (AM) & After School (PM) Care Choose your own schedule (1 day required/contract) Drop-In (non-scheduled -less than 7 day notice) Non-School Enrichment Days(NSED) School Year Contract only Inclement Weather Days (IWD) School Year Contract only PAYMENT Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, credit/debit cards and bank accounts are all accepted as a payment options. These classes focus on having fun on the ice while safely learning basic movements and fundamentals of skating. Instructors use the Learn2Skate USA curriculum which is sanctioned by U.S. Figure Skating and USA Hockey. Skate rental is available for $3.00 per class and must be paid for the entire session on the first day of class. FullRochester Scholastic Chess Tournament (Gr. K-8)Brain BoostersLet's Play Chess!Celebrate National Chess Day by participating in the largest youth chess tournament in Rochester. Students can expect a supportive environment with instruction from experienced chess players and high school role models. Students will be paired with others at a similar skill level and do not need any prior experience in chess events. This opportunity is presented in partnership by Rochester Chess and Rochester Community Education. All Experience Levels WelcomeAny student in grades K-8 may participate. Participants will play in one of three divisions. Beginner (Grades K-2): Afternoon only. If you understand how to move the pieces, you are ready to have fun and play chess with other kids. Novice (Grades 3-8): Students will be paired with students of a similar skill level. This division may be a good fit for students who have not previously competed in a chess event. Advanced (Grades K-8): Tournament results will be rated by the United States Chess Federation (USCF). A USCF membership is required and can be purchased on their website for $24. Players in the Advanced section will be required to record their moves. Register early as the tournament is capped at a limited number of participants. Learning and PrizesPrize support - Trophies and medals will be awarded to the top finishers in the Novice and Advanced divisions. Excellent instructors - Chess Master Dexter Thompson, Roy Truelson, and experienced high school chess players will provide game analysis for players who record the moves of their game. Participants will learn how to shape wire branches, attach colorful beads as leaves or blossoms, and build a one-of-a-kind decorative tree. Using an upcycled tea cup adds extra character and makes each piece uniquely charming. This project blends sculpture, wirework, and imagination into a keepsake full of personality.
