RiversideSchool Age Child Care (SACC)The School Age Child Care Program is available at all Rochester Public Schools Elementary sites. The program provides a safe, nurturing environment where children can feel they are significant and they belong. Our goal of the School Age Child Care Program is to provide a variety of developmentally appropriate activities including arts/crafts, STEM activities, self-directed play, field trips, library, tech time, physical activities (indoor/outdoor), community service, and to offer an environment where homework is encouraged. You will register for summer and school year care separately based on your family needs. Registrations are reviewed in the order they are received in our online system and can take up to ten (10) business days to process. These classes focus on having fun on the ice while safely learning basic movements and fundamentals of skating. Instructors use the Learn2Skate USA curriculum which is sanctioned by U.S. Figure Skating and USA Hockey. Skate rental is available for $3.00 per class and must be paid for the entire session on the first day of class. NewRochester Scholastic Chess Tournament (Gr. K-8)Brain BoostersLet's Play Chess!Celebrate National Chess Day by participating in the largest youth chess tournament in Rochester. Students can expect a supportive environment with instruction from experienced chess players and high school role models. Students will be paired with others at a similar skill level and do not need any prior experience in chess events. This opportunity is presented in partnership by Rochester Chess and Rochester Community Education. All Experience Levels WelcomeAny student in grades K-8 may participate. Participants will play in one of three divisions. Beginner (Grades K-2): Afternoon only. If you understand how to move the pieces, you are ready to have fun and play chess with other kids. Novice (Grades 3-8): Students will be paired with students of a similar skill level. This division may be a good fit for students who have not previously competed in a chess event. Advanced (Grades K-8): Tournament results will be rated by the United States Chess Federation (USCF). A USCF membership is required and can be purchased on their website for $24. Players in the Advanced section will be required to record their moves. Register early as the tournament is capped at a limited number of participants. Learning and PrizesPrize support - Trophies and medals will be awarded to the top finishers in the Novice and Advanced divisions. Excellent instructors - Chess Master Dexter Thompson, Roy Truelson, and experienced high school chess players will provide game analysis for players who record the moves of their game. This year, National Chess Day falls on October 10th, 2026. National Chess Day was started by President Gerald Ford in 1976 with these words. It has captivated the attention of players and spectators worldwide and will continue to do so as long as competition and excellence challenge mankind." Participants will learn how to shape wire branches, attach colorful beads as leaves or blossoms, and build a one-of-a-kind decorative tree. Using an upcycled tea cup adds extra character and makes each piece uniquely charming. This project blends sculpture, wirework, and imagination into a keepsake full of personality. Participants will learn how to twist and shape wire into a tree form, then add beads to create colorful leaves or seasonal accents.
